Off-Duty Firefighter Assaulted By Teens After He Defended Elderly Couple

Authorities in New York City are trying to identify a group of teenagers who attacked an off-duty firefighter. Police say the assault happened on Sunday (May 19) morning when the firefighter saw the teens harassing an elderly couple.

The 38-year-old, who has not been identified, stepped in to defend the couple when he was sucker punched in the back of the head by one of the teens. He fell to the ground while the teen continued to stomp on him.

He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion. He also broke five teeth and required 25 stitches before he was released.

The police released surveillance footage of the six suspects, who are between 15 and 17 years old. Authorities have offered a $2,500 reward for any information leading to their arrest.

A doorman at a nearby building witnessed the attack and told the New York Daily News the teens were making vulgar remarks to the elderly couple, who was riding bikes.

"They were a bunch of hoodlums. Just rowdy, misdirected, misguided kids. Kids think they can do whatever they want to do," he said. "It's some real punk juvenile crap to get him from behind instead of facing him like the gentleman he is."
